Great news! The Karmic Koala has just arrived and I like the new version very much. The coolest thing however is that now you can install RedNotebook directly from the new Software-Center or on the command line just by typing:

sudo apt-get install rednotebook

Unfortunately Ubuntu doesn’t always ship the latest versions of some packages. In Karmic you find RedNotebook version 0.8.1. If you want to get a newer version, follow the instructions here to add the new Karmic repository.

I am pleased to announce that RedNotebook is now fully translatable. That means that if you’re lucky, you’ll get the next version of RedNotebook in your language!

I have already finished the German translation and some folks are already working on the French and Romanian one. If you’d like to help out providing RedNotebook for your fellow speakers, you can easily do so.

Just head over to the translation page, become a member of the Launchpad Translators and start translating. Your help is very much appreciated.

Jonathan has just sent me an update of the RedNotebook users map. I think this is pretty cool. And these are only the Ubuntu users, and only those that updated to 0.8.7 in the last 36 hours. All other distros and the BSD and Windows users are not included in the map.

Some Numbers: 729 downloads in the map, of which 710 for jaunty and 19 for intrepid.

Update 04.10.09 18:00: The Ubuntu deb package has been downloaded 1350 times, resulting in 850 unique points on the map. Greetings to the people in Honolulu Postcards are always welcome!

There is also a nice and long review about an earlier version of RedNotebook on Associated Content.

Hi everyone,

I just released RedNotebook version 0.7.6 . This version contains many enhancements both on the surface and under the hood:

• Undu and redo for the main text was added. Ctrl-Z and Ctrl-Y bring you back and forth in the editing history (The history is cleared when you change dates, of course).
• Libyaml is now used for faster loading and dumping of files (Big journals now open ~10 times faster).
• Additionally there are some speed improvements for navigation between days.
• I added information for Latex to PDF conversion and a shortcut for turning on/off the preview: Ctrl+P.
• There is now a new entry in the edit menu called “Find” which brings you directly to the search field.

Get RedNotebook for Ubuntu

Jonathan Wiltshire has created a repository for Ubuntu. You can use that repository and always get the latest RedNotebook version automatically. Enable the repository either by using a graphical or command line approach. If anything is unclear, just drop me a note in the forum.

New: Jonathan has enabled SSL for the repository, so you can now use https:// instead of http:// for maximum security (the apt-transport-https package, which is needed for that, is installed by default in Ubuntu)

Karmic Koala:

If you’re using Ubuntu Karmic, you find RedNotebook in the Software-Center. You can also install from command line by doing:

sudo apt-get install rednotebook

Deb Packages:

If you don’t want to use the repository, you can also directly navigate to the Hardy, Intrepid, Jaunty, and Karmic directories and download the latest .deb files there.

Repository (Graphical Tools):

Instructions on adding a new repository can also be found in the Ubuntu Documentation.

Repository (Command Line):

• Open a terminal and call "sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list".

• Add the appropriate line to the opened file and save the file:

(If you have the apt-transport-https package installed, you can change the http to https for more security)

• Then type the following in a terminal to download the gpg key and install RedNotebook:

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver pgp.mit.edu --recv-key FF95D333
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install rednotebook

Hi Everyone,
RedNotebook 0.6.0 has just been released. The change to 0.6.x marks that the transition from wxWidgets to PyGTK is done and that all old features are now implemented. As you may have seen there are also many new features, bugfixes and other improvements. For example,

• There is now a preview of a day’s content either in RedNotebook itself (if you use GTKMozembed), or your browser
• Your data is saved even if the program exits abnormally (terminal closed etc.)
• New clouds for your tags and categories have been added
• You can check for a new version (look under the Help Menu)

In version 0.6.0 very nice features were added:

• You can now embed images into your day’s text
• Adding links to local files is now possible
• Links and mail addresses are recognized automatically, but you can also add named links

To access those new features, click on the “Insert” button on the middle toolbar.
